Chapter 2 — How to read a football match LIVE while it's playing
A live match is a dynamic system: every minute, the probability of everything shifts. PronoStats recomputes predictions every 15 seconds via WebSocket and stores a per-minute statistical snapshot. That means you can see not just current state but trend. Eight things to watch, ordered from fastest signal to slowest-confirming.
1. Live xG — who deserves to be winning
The score is the one thing EVERYONE sees. Live xG is what separates spectators from readers. Live xG 1.4 vs 0.3 with the score 0-0 after 60 minutes means: the home side is dominating chances, the goal is coming soon if pace holds. Live xG 0.6 vs 0.5 with score 1-0 means: the side ahead got lucky on their only chance and the equalizer is statistically plausible. PronoStats shows live xG in the Live Prediction panel and refreshes it on every snapshot.
2. Momentum chart — pressure minute by minute
The PronoStats momentum chart tracks a 0-100 value (50 = balanced) that blends possession (40%), xG share (35%) and shots share (25%). Above 60 = home dominating, below 40 = away dominating. What the chart lets you see is the TREND: a team trending down from minute 30 to 60 is losing control, even if the score is still in their favor. It's one of the richest and least-watched signals across most platforms. The momentum chart lives in the Live AI tab of every Premium match.
3. Shots on target / total shots — chance quality
20 total shots but 2 on target tells you the team is shooting from distance out of desperation or poor selection. 8 total shots with 6 on target tells you the opposite: rare entries but clinical, every shot is a real chance. Above 50% (on target / total) signals a team creating well; under 25% signals desperation or poor structure. PronoStats shows both in the Live Stats panel — read the ratio, not the absolute.
4. Possession vs shots — sterile or lethal possession?
Possession alone is worthless. What matters is its conversion into shots. A team on 65% possession with 4 shots is parking in midfield: passing in circles without penetration. The opposite side at 35% with 9 shots is countering and arriving in the box. Historically, teams big on possession but light on shots are exposed to counters. PronoStats shows both side-by-side, and the disconnect is one of the earliest indicators an underperformance is coming.
5. Substitutions — how they flip momentum
Substitutions are the most undervalued moments. A striker coming on at the 60th with his team trailing changes three things: the team pushes harder (psychology), the substituted player was tired while he's fresh, the opposition has to re-adapt. A triple defensive change at the 75th with a lead is the coach signalling shut-shop — red flag for Over markets. PronoStats shows subs in the live Timeline.
6. Cards as a signal — not just for Card Over markets
A yellow card to a center-back in the 10th minute changes the match: for the next 80 minutes that player avoids risky duels, leaving space behind. Three yellows for the same side in the first half means intensity above sustainable — someone is risking red. A red, we all know, flips the math: the PronoStats model applies -25% to the 10-man side's attack and +15% to the opposition. Live, watch cards as a predictor of more cards rather than the cards themselves.
7. Goal probability next 10 minutes — the fastest predictive signal
PronoStats computes in real time the probability of at least one goal in the next 10 minutes. It's based on current state: cumulative xG, recent shots, possession, minute, score. Above 30% in a Live 1-0 at the 70th with the trailing side pressing means an equalizer is likely. Below 12% signals the match has 'died' — Live Unders come back into value. It's the most short-term signal the system exposes, available in the Live AI view for Premium.
8. Live AI commentary — Groq reads the match every 5 minutes
Every 5 minutes during a match, PronoStats queries Groq (Llama 3.3 70B) with the live context and gets a text analysis: what's working, what isn't, a tactical observation. It's not infallible but it's the fastest way to get a structured read while the match runs. Especially useful when you're following multiple matches and can't watch every detail. Available in 5 languages for Premium. The question to ask while reading the commentary: is the AI confirming what I see, or seeing something I missed?
Chapter quiz
Check if the concepts stuck — nothing tracked, just for you.
1.It's 0-0 at the 60th with xG 1.4 vs 0.3. What's likely?
2.20 total shots and 2 on target. What does it mean?
3.What changes if a player gets a red card?
Frequently asked questions
How fast does the live data refresh?
Score and stats every 15 seconds via WebSocket; live predictions recomputed on every snapshot (1-2 per minute). AI commentary every 5 minutes.
Is the momentum chart based on official data?
Yes, the underlying data (possession, shots, xG, corners) comes from API-Football. The 0-100 momentum score is an internal linear blend documented on /methodology.
Can I see live stats without Premium?
Basic stats (score, possession, shots) yes. The momentum chart, next-10-min goal probability and AI commentary are Premium.
